More often than not, a furnace that has been red-tagged will need to be replaced. The “Red Tag” is normally used to inform the homeowner that their furnace is no longer safe for use. There are many situations in which a red tag will be issued but most commonly for cracked heat exchangers. When a furnace heat exchanger cracks, it opens when heated to allow exhaust and possibly carbon monoxide to enter the circulation air to your home. This is a potentially harmful or deadly circumstance, therefore making the hazard tag a necessity for the service company to warn you of this condition. In this case, the best course of action would be to immediately turn the furnace off and replace it.
There are some scenarios where the red tagged condition may be repaired and the furnace placed back into service. This may be the case of an incorrect venting system, inadequate combustion air space, incorrectly installed or removal of safety devices, potential fire hazards, improperly installed fuel or gas piping system, or many other customer safety issues.
An honest service company can help you make the proper decision to repair or replace. They will help by weighing service repair costs vs replacement options, age and condition of your existing system, and offer possible efficiency improvements that your old system
lacked. Increasing system efficiency will ultimately save energy costs and allow you to save money in the heating seasons to come.
